Las canciones de Michael Jackson le han dado la vuelta al mundo. Son piezas comerciales, rítmicas y con un estilo muy personal. Quien las escucha, sabe que el intérprete es Michael Jackson. También en ellas se observa la evolución y la madurez del artista. Se puede identificar, por ejemplo, la infancia y adolescencia de Michael en canciones como Ben, Rockin’ Robin, I Want You Back, ABC, I’ll Be There y You Can’t Win, por mencionar sólo algunas. A continuación, el joven Michael, a los 21 años, causó furor con el álbum Off The Wall, con recordados éxitos como Don’T Stop ‘Til You Get Enough y Rock With You. Tres años después, el mundo presenció el lanzamiento de Thriller, obra maestra de la música popular y un parte aguas para los videos musicales, convertidos en cortometrajes. Thriller logró romper barreras raciales en la industria del video, y con nueve canciones de las cuales siete se convirtieron en singles destrozó la idea de que un disco podía aspirar a dos o tres singles vendibles. El álbum, como es sabido, figura en los récords Guiness como el más vendido de todos los tiempos y tras su lanzamiento llegó a comprarse a razón de un millón de copias por semana. Con Thriller, Jackson alcanzó la cúspide de su carrera musical y se ganó el estatus de gran estrella de la música popular del siglo XX.

A Thriller siguieron Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991), HIStory: Past, Present and Future Book I (1995), e Invincible (2001). Tras Thriller la imagen física de Jackson cambió, al igual que los temas abordados en sus canciones. Mientras que Thriller se centró en lo sobre natural, la violencia racial (Beat It) y su disputada paternidad (Billie Jean), en Bad se observa a un Michael Jackson rudo, romántico, y con duetos inolvidables (Stevie Wonder en Just Good Friends y Siedah Garrett en I Just Can’t Stop Loving You, que es, de hecho, la única canción que Michael grabaría en español con el título Todo mi amor eres tú).

Cuatro años después aparecería Dangerous álbum que superó en ventas a Bad. En Dangerous se observa a un Michael Jackson más explícito en torno a su sexualidad (Remember The Time, In The Closet, Black Or White – en su versión ampliada-), pero también a la figura espiritual y humanitaria (Will You Be There, Keep The Faith, Heal The World y, por supuesto, Gone Too Soon).

Para 1995, en HIStory, Jackson lanzó una recopilación de sus éxitos, pero también presentó, en el disco 2, un álbum con temas nuevos o interpretaciones a su estilo, de canciones muy famosas como Smile, de Charles Chaplin y Come Together, de The Beatles. El álbum vio la luz justo cuando los presuntos abusos de Jackson contra menores de edad ocuparon los titulares de los medios de comunicación. El Michael Jackson de HIStory, por lo tanto, se manifiesta a disgusto con los medios, grabando, junto con su hermana Janet, la celebrada canción Scream. En este álbum, Jackson reitera temas como la marginación (desarrollando un extraordinario video en las favelas de Brasil, They Don’t Care About Us), su preocupación por la depredación ambiental (Earth Song), y presenta una semblanza sobre su infancia (Childhood) con la célebre frase por favor no me juzgues, sólo trata de amarme.

Su último álbum grabado en un estudio fue Invincible (2001), el cual, lamentablemente, careció de la promoción adecuada ante la amenaza de Jackson, de cambiarse de disquera. Sus ventas fueron muy inferiores si se le compara con discos precedentes. Tommy Mottola, jerarca de Sony Music, canceló toda la propaganda para las canciones y los videos que se tenían contemplados para este álbum, pese a la cual, a la muerte de Jackson, ha habido una revaloración de su contenido. En Invincible hay temas muy bien logrados como Unbreakable, You Rock My World y una balada rock & soul en la que participa Carlos Santana: Whatever Happens. Esta última, tiene un estribillo que revela parte del estado de ánimo de Jackson para ese tiempo: no importa lo que suceda, no sueltes mi mano.

En sí, la discografía de Jackson parece breve, aunque es muy sustanciosa (Tommy Mottola afirma que hay “toneladas” de material discográfico y audiovisual de Jackson, mismo que se dará a conocer en los siguientes años), pero lo más importante es que es, en muchos sentidos, es autobiográfica y muestra no sólo la evolución artística y profesional de Jackson, sino los desafíos que debió afrontar a lo largo de su vida.

Su legado musical y artístico ya son parte de la historia. Mucho se especula que su deceso sobrevino en el ocaso de su capacidad creativa. Pero considerando el perfeccionismo que caracterizó a Michael Jackson en su exitosa carrera musical, es muy aventurado afirmar que lo mejor de él ya había pasado. Quienes presenciaron los ensayos de la que habría sido su gira del “regreso” This Is It!, dan cuenta de la espectacularidad que se tenía planeada. En cualquier caso, mañana Michael Jackson habría cumplido 51 años y el mundo entero prepara una serie de merecidos homenajes en memoria del rey del pop. Y seguramente pasarán los años y su onomástico será celebrado de la misma manera. Mientras tanto y por ahora, sólo resta decir: ¡feliz cumpleaños Michael Jackson!
